THE OPACITY OF US [2025]

What is THE OPACITY OF US?
The Opacity of Us is a poetry collection written by Wei Wei, Zipeng Wang, and Puqian Ma. Through a deeply introspective lens, this collection explores the contradictions, tensions, solitude, understanding, and misunderstandings that shape intimate relationships. The word “Opacity” perfectly encapsulates the struggle of navigating closeness and distance—where the desire for connection is met with an inherent inability to fully perceive or comprehend the Other.

The first poem delves into themes of attachment and avoidance, illustrating the paradox of longing for intimacy while simultaneously resisting it. Distance becomes both a barrier and a necessity, leaving both sides unable to fully see or understand each other.

The second poem contemplates existence and memory, capturing the lingering traces of emotions that persist even after separation. It reflects on how relationships, though transient, continue to shape and haunt us.

The third poem reflects on solitude and freedom, emphasizing that interpersonal relationships always retain a degree of opacity. In the end, loneliness remains the only constant—a space where one finds both confinement and liberation.

With its direct yet poetic expression, The Opacity of Us encapsulates the fluidity and complexity of human connection. It is a meditation on the fragile, shifting boundaries between closeness and distance, illuminating the ways in which we attempt to understand, hold onto, and ultimately let go of one another.
